The next instalment of the ICCCAD Seminar Series will take place Thursday, March 12 at 3 pm in the ICCCAD Conference Room. Roufa Khanum, Farzana Rahman and Ibrat Sharif from the Centre for Climate Change and Environmental Research (C3ER) at BRAC University will be presenting in a seminar titled ‘Role of Women in Climate Change Adaptation’.
About the seminar
The presentation entitled ‘Role of Women in Climate Change Adaptation’ describes the impact on climate change on women and their livelihood, and also illustrates their adaptation strategies to climate change. C3ER has conducted four studies and these are- Climate-Smart Livelihood Options for Ultra Poor women, Access to Safe Drinking Water in Coastal Areas of Bangladesh, The Role of Governance against Climate Change Induced Migration and Moving Towards Climate Smart BRAC: Strategies and Action Plans in District Level. This presentation is based on the findings of these studies. The studies found the climate change impacts on women, their vulnerabilities and their adaptation mechanisms.
About the speakers
Roufa Khanum has been working as Lecturer/ Coordinator – Operations at the Centre for Climate Change and Environmental Research (C3ER) of BRAC University. She has expertise for managing different levels of human and financial resources at the institution level. She has working experience on Disaster Management sector, more specifically on development of MIS, GIS mapping & analysis. Her principle job responsibility includes research on Bio-physical modeling for assessing the impact of climate change on environment; Integrated adaptation planning and environment friendly infrastructure design; Comprehensive disaster management in a changing climate; Community based adaptation and awareness raising at local level; Gender and climate induced migration including population dynamics and displacement; Natural resource management to prevent degradation and preservation of ecologically critical areas. Ms Khanum has contributed her expertise in capacity building, livelihood analysis, policy gap analysis and sustainable development context in many research projects. Moreover, Ms. Khanum is also associated with the development and management of geo-spatial database, geographic mapping in different projects and acquainted with remote sensing image extraction and analysis as and when required. She obtained her MSc and BSc in Geography from the National University. He has joined Center for Environmental and Geographic Information Services (CEGIS) in February’2006 and rendered her service under the Business Development Division & Climate Study Division as Business Development Officer/GIS Specialist till August, 2011. As a Business Development Officer, her experience was on developing annual strategic plans and harnessing funding opportunities from potential public and private funding sources.
Farzana Rahman has been serving the Centre for Climate Change and Environmental Research as Lecturer from January, 2014. She brings over 3 years of development experience acquired through working in both research organization and development organization. Primarily she is the responsible person for developing new projects for the centre. Prior joining at C3ER, she served BRAC Social Enterprises where she was responsible for generating and analyzing financial statements and rolling out different brand and trade driven campaigns. Apart from these tasks, she was responsible for collaborating among different development programmes and enterprises to create synergy. She started her career with GMark Consulting Limited as a development researcher where she handled couple of assignments i.e. value chain studies of dairy and chili, sub-sector assessment of various agricultural products . She has successfully accomplished divergent research funded by Oxfam GB, Swisscontact, Practical Action and Traidcraft Exchange. Currently she obtained her MBA from BRAC University. She received her bachelor degree from institute of Business Administration, Jahangirnagar University.
Ibrat Sharif has joined the Centre for Climate Change and Environmental Research (C3ER) in January 2015 as a Research Assistant. She is working on the project entitled ‘Ensuring safe drinking water on coastal region’. She obtained her MS degree in Environmental Science from Dept. of Soil, Water & Environment, of Dhaka University. She achieved another Masters on Population Sciences, University of Dhaka. Previously, she has worked on projects conducted by Dept of Soil, Water & Environment. She has conducted researches on environmental issues focusing on climate change and soil carbon sequestration.
