Lecture Title: How we achieved the 1.5 degrees long term goal in the Paris Agreement(COP 21)

By: Dr. Saleemul Huq, Director, ICCCAD

Date: Friday 22 January 2016 Time: 6.30 PM

Followed by refreshments.

Lecture Contents: Dr. Saleemul Huq has attended all the annual Conferences of Parties (COPs) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) as an independent observer. At COP21 held in Paris in December 2015 a major new decision was made to change the long term temperature goal from 2 Degrees to 1.5 Degrees. This was demanded by the vulnerable countries like Bangladesh but was opposed both by the advanced countries such as USA and EU as well as by the big developing countries such as China and India. In the end the goal was indeed changed to 1.5 Degrees. Dr. Saleemul Huq will tell us the story of how this remarkable result was achieved, while also reviewing the general deliberations that took place at COP21. This lecture would constitute an invaluable opportunity to hear the details of this game-changing Conference from an insider who will be among us fresh from the scene of the action.

Lecturer: Dr. Saleemul Huq obtained his PhD from Imperial College in 1978 and was founding Executive Director of the Bangladesh Center for Advanced Studies (BCAS), a leading independent research and policy think tank in Bangladesh, where he was in charge of management and strategy of the organization. Since then he has over the years established himself as one of the world’s leading authorities in the field of Climate Change. Dr. Huq is a Senior Fellow at the International Institute for Environment & Development (IIED) in the UK, where he is involved in building negotiating capacity and supporting the engagement of the Least Developed Countries (LDCs) in UNFCCC. Dr. Huq has been serving since 2009 as Director of the International Centre for Climate Change & Development (ICCCAD) located in Dhaka which aims to grow the capacity of Bangladeshi stakeholders, while enabling people and organizations from outside to benefit from training in Bangladesh.
