About the seminar
2015 is a special year for global development. It is the expiration date for the Millennium Development Goals and the adoption of a new post-2015 development framework that proposes a comprehensive set of goals entitled “Sustainable Development Goals” (SDGs). A special meeting of the UN will be held in New York in September that aims to approve the set of SDGs. 2015 also marks the 20-year anniversary of the Fourth World Conference on Women that was held in Beijing in September 1995 that produced the historic Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action. This is considered to be the “most progressive blueprint ever for advancing women’s rights.” The 59th Session of the Commission on the Status of Women was held in new York in March to discuss the progress since Beijing. Another important UN conference, The World Conference on Disaster Risk Reduction was held in Sendai, Japan in March to discuss and strategise on how to reduce the risk of disasters. In July, the Financing for Development (FFD) meeting will be held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia’s capital, to talk about how to raise more money for projects that would speed development. The final conference, COP20 will be held in Paris in December, when governments hope to sign a global treaty on tackling climate change.
Climate change is at the heart of the different negotiations and conferences listed above since it plays a crucial role in development. This presentation will discuss the significance and discussions around climate change in these processes.
