The next instalment of the ICCCAD Seminar Series will take place at 3:00 pm on Wednesday, March 25 at the ICCCAD Baridhara Office, Apartment A-5, 98 Park Road, Baridhara Diplomatic Zone.
Mr. Mofizur Rahman will be speaking in a seminar titled ‘Ocean Acidification and Its Potential Effects on Marine Life’
About the seminar:
This talk will be based on part of the speaker’s master thesis under German Government Funded
BIOACID project. The research has been done in Functional Ecology research group in Alfred
Wegner Institute for Polar and Marine Research, shortly AWI.
Ocean acidification termed as “other carbon problem” and considered as evil twin in global
warming. Its impact on calcifying organisms (coral reefs etc.) is well understood but the effects
on non-calcifying organisms; mostly marine plants are poorly understood. This research tried to
understand the effects of climate induced ocean acidification on marine plants and associated
grazers. Results reveal the potential impacts on plant-herbivore interactions through cascade
effects due to Ocean Acidification.
About the speaker:
Mofizur Rahman is a Research Investigator at Center for Population, Urbanization and Climate Change in icddr,b, a leading health research institute worldwide, and have previously worked with WorldFish, Stockholm Resilience Center, University of Oxford and Bangladesh Center for Advanced Studies. He is an Environmental Science graduate and completed a Joint Masters in Marine Biodiversity and Conservation under the Erasmas Mundus Scholarship program. He has also attended a graduate (M.Sc.) program on Global Change Ecology in Germany. He is highly influenced by the concept of resilience, sustainability and tipping points and is attempting to integrate natural sciences with social sciences as well as science with policy.
