CBA

“Community-based adaptation (CBA) to climate change focuses on empowering communities to use their own knowledge and decision-making processes to take action.”

ICCCAD has been a contributor in this conference series largely through its association with the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED). Several of ICCCAD’s team members have been active in attending these conferences while also providing feedback and support prior and during these events. These annual international CBA conferences have been held by IIED in various vulnerable countries to provide learning and sharing spaces to explore the challenges and opportunities and share experience and knowledge from CBA activities amongst practitioners, policymakers, researchers, funders and the communities at risk. The 7th International Conference on CBA was held in Dhaka, Bangladesh in 2013 and welcomed over 250 participants from all over the world, with several hundred more engaged via online social platforms.

The 8th International Conference on CBA was held in Kathmandu, Nepal from 28-30 April 2014. Over 400 participants from more than 60 countries attended with hundreds more following the events and interacting via live-web streamed video, comments and social media. The conference shared the latest developments in community-based adaptation financing, planning and best practices. The conference also launched the Kathmandu Declaration on Financing Local Adaptation which called for a radical shift of climate finance to better ensure vulnerable communities have the resources to adapt to the challenges to come.
