Bangladesh has been rapidly urbanizing over the last few decades. By 2035, nearly 110 million people are expected to inhabit urban areas in the country, constituting about half of the total population. Urbanization has, however, largely outpaced the development of urban infrastructure in Bangladesh. Urban centers suffer from acute shortages of basic services. Water supply is scarce. Drainage systems are underdeveloped and poorly maintained. Transport infrastructure is substandard which, coupled with poor traffic management, renders significant economic losses. Health problems are common due to poor sanitation and waste management.

Climate change induced shocks and stresses are expected to further append to this problem of unplanned urbanization. Urban centers in particular face a myriad of social, political and environmental risks as a result of climate change, which will affect their service provisions, as well as the health and livelihood of the citizens. Urban practitioners in the country therefore need to understand how to conduct climate change vulnerability assessment and develop resilience action plans.

The three‐day training workshop organized by the International Centre for Climate Change and Development (ICCCAD) at Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB) has been fragmented to four modules. It provides tools and techniques for assessing climate change impacts and vulnerabilities; presents a framework for identification, evaluation, selection, and implementation of climate adaptation projects; and finally looks at the options available for financing adaptation projects and methods of accessing climate change finance. This will also help to internalize the understanding of vulnerability,
exposure, hazards and risks.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
The training will provide urban practitioners with the knowledge and tools required to integrate climate change adaptation and resilience components into their area of work. In particular, it will help participants:

  • Understand urban development and climate change linkages
  • Apply knowledge and skills on conducting vulnerability assessment
  • Collaborate with peers and experts
